If there is an image that corresponds to the state of the nation, it would be that of a cruise ship on a never-ending cruise facing a gathering storm. On each of its multiple decks, there is every modern comfort and entertainment. The bands are playing, the theaters are full, the restaurants crowded, and the boutiques well stocked. No one seems concerned about the storm.
