Nearly 200 supporters, friends and members of The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) gathered on October 23-25 in Spring Grove, Penn. to discuss the theme “On the Winning Side of History: Our Role in the Coming Storm.”
As part of the discussion, author John Horvat presented considerations based on his book, Return to Order: From a Frenzied Economy to an Organic Christian Society—Where We’ve Been, How We Got Here, and Where We Need to Go. His talk was titled “The Benedict Option and a Return to Order.”
Mr. Horvat looked at the proposal of those who say that one should imitate the strategy of Saint Benedict of Nursia who in the sixth century withdrew to an intensely liturgical life in isolated monastic communities “far from both decadent Rome and raging barbarians. It is what some conservatives are now calling the Benedict or B-Option—to flee from society, get off the grids and live out our Christian lives on our own terms.”
The author gave a presentation of what is meant by the Benedict option as proposed by many Catholics and Christians. He then dealt with the problems with this Benedict option. Finally, he presented a Return to Order perspective of the whole problem.
